What is a Musical Staff and a Grand Staff?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The staff is basically a set of five horizontal lines that appear vertically thus creating four spaces and on these lines and spaces as they are called, musical notes are written. The lower down the notes are written on the staff the lower the pitch and the higher up the higher the pitch. Of course, there a little bit more to it than that, so let’s go in to a bit more detail.

The Staff

The staff is a very generic term, and would be used in a musical environment such as a music teacher and pupil. A more accurate term would be musical staff. Of course even this to a non-musical person could mean a companies workforce or staff that sing every day (get it, staff that are musical). Just to confuse things even more the staff is also known as a stave or a musical stave. Depending on where in the world you learn music will determine which word you use, but they are both correct. (All this for five horizontal lines.)

Make sense of the staff

The staff on it own is quite unremarkable as you can probably imagine, just five lines, but it can be like a canvas for great works of art or simple melodies. To start creating music on these lines we first need to add a clef, which for a single musical staff is normally a treble clef, a time signature so we know how many beats to the bar the music will have. Then we need to add bar lines, which in turn create bars, and within those bars we will add musical notes and suddenly our five horizontal lines have turned in to a music composition, albeit simple, but music never the less.

The Grand Staff

This is a bit more complex than the staff and includes two sets of five lines connected together with a symbol known as a brace and also includes a treble clef on the top set of lines and a bass cleff on the bottom set of lines. Both clefs are always written on the left hand side of the Grand Staff. Again, time signature and bar lines will be added to the Grand Staff and finally musical notes added to the top set of lines, now known as the treble clef and the bottom set now called the bass clef.

From this simple canvas or manuscript as it is called, music is written for electronic keyboard and piano. The electronic keyboard normally uses the staff (one set of five lines) using the treble clef and you will often see chord symbols above it to indicate which chord should be played with the left hand. The piano will normally use a Grand Staff. The treble clef is used for the right hand and the bass clef used for the left hand.

To get a better understanding of the staff and the Grand Staff look at a piece of sheet music and you can see what has been added to those simple five horizontal lines.

Downloading Mp3 Music Files

Image : http://www.flickr.com

There are several different methods that you can use to get your hands on some MP3 Music Files:

P2P File Sharing Networks.
Websites.
FTP.

Some people assume that MP3’s in general are illegal actually this is not the case. It is perfectly legal to share MP3 Files that are not Copyrighted. It is illegal to share Music that is Copyrighted, for example any of the Music in the charts at the moment.

There are several Websites on the Internet that allow people to Download MP3 Music for Free, this is Music that’s produced and allowed to be distributed. The best place to look for Free MP3 Files is on the Internet. Many of the Bands will have their own Websites that offer Free Downloads.

Another place to look is on Blogs many Bands want to make it big, and so will release Free Content on their Blogs in order to do so.

What you can’t do is Download Copyrighted Music without permission, this is known as Music Piracy. The Music Industry claims that it is loosing millions of dollars every year due to Illegal Downloads recently this has had a lot of coverage.

Metallica was the first group to moan about illegal Downloads. The thing is that the Music Industry isn’t necessarily loosing millions of dollars every year, not all of the people that Downloaded would have become paying customers if they couldn’t Download.

Free MP3 Music Downloads are great for new Artists and Groups who are relatively unknown. File sharing has actually made some Groups very big, and many Artists do not mind providing their Music for Free. Look on some of the big Artist’s Websites, you will no doubt find some links to some Free Content. Artists don’t mind giving you a glimpse at their work in the hope that you’ll buy the complete Album.

If you want to Download mainstream Music then you have a couple of options, you can either buy the CD, or you can pay to Download the MP3’s.

If you buy the CD then you will have every track, you can then use your computer to convert this into MP3 format. It’s extremely easy, and you can use Windows Media Player to do it. It’s currently considered ok to Rip CD’s that you own to MP3 and put them onto your MP3 player, however if you share these Files you could get in a lot of trouble.

Paying to Download the MP3’s has some huge advantages, firstly you don’t have to pay for the whole CD, many (if not all) of the Music Download Sites will sell individual tracks. This is great for Artists who just have one hit and the rest of the album is useless! You just buy what you want. You can load these MP3’s directly onto your MP3 player, or you can use Windows Media Player to make a Music CD to play on your home HiFi. You can even make your own Music Compilations!

When you’re choosing a Site to pay to Download Music from make sure you stick to the big Names, you don’t want to pay only to have Pirated Music. There are a number of Websites that charge for Downloads, but the Record Companies or Artists never see any of this money. If you’re going to pay, make sure you do it right!

Many people still Download Pirated Music, although this is still possible if you get caught you can be in very deep trouble! Everybody is cracking down on the illegal Music Downloads, why risk it ? The individual Music Tracks are very cheap it’s really not worth the Risk.

Maya and Miguel Music CDs

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Overview

Maya and Miguel made its first appearance on PBS Kids GO! in the fall of 2004 and has quickly grown to become a favorite among many American households. Maya and Miguel is a children’s cartoon geared towards providing the Latin community with a wholesome children’s show that embraces their heritage while promoting cultural differences in America. The show often uses both the Hispanic and the English language with a strong emphasis on helping Latin Americans understand that they can keep their heritage and still be a part of America.

Review

There aren’t any new, life changing songs on any of these music CDs. In fact, most of the songs were originally recorded by various artists during the 50’s and have been re-recorded various times throughout the years. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I actually enjoyed their song choices: the vocals of the children singing, and the smoothness of the music itself, but…

Personally, I would have liked to have seen more originality in the song choices. I would’ve liked to have heard songs that matched the energy, vibrancy, and heart of the Maya and Miguel show.

That being said, all the songs are sung by the characters of the Maya and Miguel show so small children will have a blast singing and dancing with their favorite cartoon characters. And the lyrics offer the perfect opportunity for Spanish speaking children to learn the English language.
